How to Create an AI Character From a Photo, Step by Step
A good AI character starts with a good reference portrait and a few clear choices, and the rest takes minutes.
To create an AI character from a photo, pick a clear, front-facing portrait you have the right to use, upload it as inspiration, and choose a style and gender. The generator creates a new, original face based on it, which then stays the same in every image. Add a name and a personality and start chatting.
What makes a good inspiration portrait?
The generator can only work with what it can see. A sharp, well-lit portrait with one face looking roughly toward the camera gives it the clearest picture of the features you like: face shape, hair, expression, general mood.
Think of the portrait as a mood board with a single card. It does not have to be perfect, but every problem in the reference tends to show up in the result.
- One face only, with no one else in the frame.
- Front-facing or a slight angle, eyes visible.
- Soft, even light with no harsh shadows across the face.
- No sunglasses, masks, heavy filters or large hats.
- Good resolution, not a screenshot of a screenshot.
If you only have a group picture, crop it to a single face first. A tight, clean crop beats a wide, busy one.
Which portraits are fine to use?
Only use a portrait you have the right to use. That can be a stock picture you are licensed to use, artwork or a render you made, a picture you took of yourself, or an image whose owner allows it.
Images of minors are not allowed, and CraveMe is strictly for adults, 18+. If the person in the portrait looks or is under 18, choose a different reference.
Is the new face a copy of the photo?
No. The portrait is inspiration, not a template to duplicate. The generator takes general features from it and creates a new, original face: similar in feel, but not the same person.
That is a deliberate design choice. The new face is built to be its own, which is why the character can be used across many images without being tied to the picture you uploaded. The generated face is not meant to depict a real person.
Realistic or anime, and which gender?
Style decides how every image will look. Realistic gives you photo-like portraits and scenes. Anime gives you an illustrated look with its own proportions and color. Pick the one you actually enjoy looking at, because you will see it often.
For gender you can choose woman, man or trans woman. The new face takes its general features from your portrait, so the result stays closer to the reference when the portrait and your gender choice fit each other. A mismatch is possible, but expect the result to drift further from the reference.
How do you write a personality that works?
A personality is a short description of how the character speaks and what they care about. Three or four concrete traits work better than a long list: dry humor, curious, a little shy, loves late-night talks about music.
You can also add a backstory or a scene, such as where the character lives or what their day looks like. The more specific the detail, the less generic the replies feel. The character answers in whatever language you write in, so you do not need to set that up.
Describe behavior, not adjectives. “Teases you gently and asks follow-up questions” says more than “friendly and nice”.
What are the most common mistakes?
The most common one is a poor reference: a dark, blurry or heavily filtered picture leads to a vague face. Close behind is a cropped or turned-away face, where the generator has little to read.
The second group of mistakes is about expectations. The result is a new face, not an exact likeness, so do not expect a copy. And a personality that is too short or too contradictory makes the character feel flat. Change the reference or edit the character and try again; you can keep up to 10 characters.
How does CraveMe do it in two screens?
CraveMe works inside Telegram as a bot and mini app. On the first screen you upload your portrait, choose realistic or anime, and pick woman, man or trans woman. CraveMe generates a new portrait, and that becomes the character’s permanent face.
On the second screen you set a name, personality, body type and traits, and optionally a scene or backstory. Save, and you land in the chat straight away. Every new image uses a fresh scene and pose with the same face, so the character stays recognizable.
- Screen 1: upload a portrait, choose style and gender, get a new face.
- Screen 2: name, personality, traits, optional backstory, then save.
- Chat right away. Each new character can be edited later.
FAQ
Can I create an AI character without a photo?
In CraveMe the portrait step is where the face comes from, so you start with an inspiration portrait. It only needs to be a clear one you have the right to use.
Will the character look exactly like my photo?
No. CraveMe creates a new, original face with similar general features, not an exact likeness of the portrait.
What happens to the portrait I upload?
Uploaded portraits and generated images are kept for a few days and then deleted automatically. You can also delete your characters or your account at any time in the bot.
Can I change the character later?
Yes. Existing characters can be edited, and you can have up to 10 characters at once.
